A South Korean crypto exchange ‘Bithumb’ is leading the way to voice phishing eradication.
According to an industry report on 30th May, it has been known that a member of Bithumb’s Customer Service team has arrested a voice phishing scammer by himself. While he was checking through the transaction history, he seized the voice phishing situation and lured the culprit to the customer service centre, reporting the case to the police at the same time. The culprit was arrested at the site by the police immediately.
This is not the first time that Bithumb prevented a voice phishing case. Recently, there has been another case where a successful voice phishing scammer attempted to withdraw through the customer service centre. The customer service attendant at Bithumb confirmed that it was a case of voice phishing scam and sent the case up to Bithumb’s Asset Protection Team. Together with a bank, the Asset Protection Team successfully prevented the withdrawal and returned the respective amount of coins back to the victimised users.
Regarding the incident, Bithumb personnel noted that, “the Customer Service Team members strive to do our best to protect our customers’ assets, not just provide them with simple consultation service” and that “the company is also doing our part by strengthening our monitoring system and response system for better security.”
Bithumb is currently managing a Customer Asset Protection team to prevent digital financial scams including voice phishing. In case of any financial scams, the team is responsible in suspending the involved account and returning the asset to the victimised user in another way. Also, the team organises and executes Scam Prevention Education sessions for the Customer Service Team members.
As another effort, Bithumb also holds Security Campaigns for its users to attend. The previous two campaigns held at Bithumb’s Customer Service Centre in Gangnam educated the attendees on safe trading by revealing real case examples. The centre distributed safety brochures on different types and examples of digital financial scams during the education centres as well. Other efforts included ‘Password Renewal Campaign’ and creation & distribution of educational videos.
Bithumb personnel noted that, “(Bithumb’s) continuous efforts to improve the investors’ asset protection have effectively reduced reports on voice phishing by 60% as compared to last month (April),” and that, “(Bithumb) will continue to do the best in Customer Asset Protection”.
