Huawei phone users rejoice as Huawei Technologies Co. announced that users will be able to download Bitcoin wallets from Friday onwards, Bloomberg reported.
According to Alejandro de la Torre, BTC.com vice president of business operations, Huawei will be releasing BTC.com Bitcoin wallet in its AppGallery, the latter being pre-installed onto all new Huawei mobile devices. This marks the first time Huawei will be offering a cryptocurrency app on its devices. While this is currently not available for current phones, the company is planning on expanding access to older phones in the future as well.
Being the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world, Huawei’s decision is expected to have a gripping impact on the Chinese market. While the Chinese government has actively blocked Android’s Google Play Store and Apple’s iTunes which restricted the access to cryptocurrency apps, many Chinese crypto enthusiasts are still able to own cryptocurrencies. Hence, the decision will undeniably benefit this group first, especially since Huawei is one of the biggest mobile phones manufacturer in China. De la Torre told Bloomberg, “It’s a good opportunity to tap into the Chinese market. The use of cashless payments with apps is very big and the traditional banking system is lacking, so there’s a good use case for crypto payments to grow there.”
Huawei was also reported to consider plans of developing a smartphone aimed at supporting decentralised blockchain applications via blockchain technology in March. According to Jaime Gonzalo, vice president of Huawei mobile services, “From our leadership position in China, the tip of the spear of mobile payments, we expect to see massive growth in global cryptocurrency adoption habits in the near future.”
